About this objectSepia photo of Daniel William Lillingston. Daniel Lillingston came to Australia on board the North Briton with the 99th Foot Regiment in 1843. He enlisted in 1842 aged 16yrs and was a member of the regimental band but also served as a soldier. Married a Hobart girl named Jane Watson. They married on Dec 24th 1849. Discharged from the army in 1850. They had 14 children )only 11 reaching adulthood).First postman/letter carrier in Ballarat. Died in 1916 and is buried in Ballarat's Old Cemetary. Photo is inscribed on the reverse as follows:-
"This was taken on May 12th - 02 my 76th birthday. Daniel L. Sneddon (Grandson) presents this photo of his Mothers' Father. First postman at Ballarat. Daniel Lillinstone - Arrived in Tasmania, Soldier in charge of convicts - Parents later bought his discharge from the Army - Appointed in Melbourne to come to the diggings as first postman. Died at Ballarat 1916. Aged 90 Yrs".
